Evidence Case Study: PSL

The following case study was provided as part of the evidence for the effectiveness of employee engagement strategies in improving performance, productivity and, in the private sector profitability.  It has been used cumulatively with other submissions compiled by many leading companies and organisations to leave little room for doubt about the statistical importance of engaging employees.

This particular case study is an additional support to The Evidence Paper

Background:

Founded in 1993 PSL are food procurement and margin improvement management experts, specialising in the foodservice market, working with the Hospitality Industry.  They currently have around 60 employees based in the UK, Ireland and Dubai.

They are a people business as much as anything else, considering good relationships as central to their business model. This applies to their people and clients.

As the organisation has grown over the last 19 years, they realised they needed to not only retain talent but most importantly, ensure newer employees understood the vision. As they have a geographically diverse workforce, many of whom work independently on a day to day basis, there were many obstacles to overcome to keep the vision strong, and retain and improve the passion and family feel of the early days.

Results:

While employee engagement requires consistency, there were some key factors that have assisted this process.  This included setting out and reinforcing the company’s vision, missions and values, focusing on employee reward and recognition and understanding the benchmark for good practice.

Over the years 50% of employees have been promoted including 3 to Board level.  Furthermore, last year their employee turnover was 12%.   They have retained 36% of people for over 10 years and 60% for over 5 years.

In addition, they are a 3 Star Accredited Company with Best Companies, having retained their Sunday Times Top 100 Status for a second year and they came 10th in the Best Employers in Hospitality Awards this year.  They strongly believe that good engagement makes good financial and business success.
