On May 29th 2014 the Engage for Success wellbeing subgroup launched the official Wellbeing & Employee Engagement: The Evidence Whitepaper. The wellbeing subgroup was launched in August 2013 to build on the paper “Why wellbeing matters: Sustaining Employee Engagement & Wellbeing”. Chaired by Wendy Cartwright, former HRD for the Olympic Delivery Authority, the group sought to build upon the great work already taking place and provide a “wellbeing, nailing the evidence” document.
The anticipation leading upto the launch from supporters of Engage for Success was met by an array from interest from various stakeholders following the launch, articles in HR Zone, CIPR, HR Magazine and Workplace Savings & benefits all sang the praises for the research behind the whitepaper. The HR magazine article quotes Dame Carol Black as saying “You can only sustain engagement if you have wellbeing”, this message really underpins the findings of this whitepaper.
The research took place over six months and was drawn from three distinct perspectives: academic publications, research by consultancies and organisational case studies. We concluded that there is a strong correlation between high wellbeing and engagement levels and these two states are also ‘mutually reinforcing’ and essential for optimal individual and organisational performance.
Those who shared and retweeted the whitepaper post seemed to agree that wellbeing made a stronger business case for Employee Engagement. All things IC praised the 12 steps to success for wellbeing, which can also be found in the full report.
