Managers are one of the most important influences on employee engagement. And yet most don’t have the support they need to deliver the engagement for which they’re held accountable. Many have had little or no development to support their skills and understanding in this area. Some get little support from their own manager!
Gallup research concluded that managers are responsible for 70% of the variance in employee engagement. Internal research by Accenture reported 80%. Professor John Oliver of the Northern Leadership Academy told Engage for Success: “99% of failure to engage staff is down to management behaviour.”
This highlights a real and significant relationship that needs to be understood and addressed.
Assessing the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the nation’s workforce one year on, a study commissioned by not-for-profit healthcare provider, Benenden Health, found that as many as 61% of managers have suffered from burnout at work since the UK was first placed into lockdown, with 20% of all managers either considering, or actually quitting their job as a result of the strain on their mental wellbeing.
