8 Essential Tips To Relationships Between Employees & Remote Workers

Whether your remote workers are working from home or the other side of the world, it’s unescapable that you’ll need to engage and communicate with these employees in the most effective way possible.

However, thanks to modern day technology, this is now easier than ever before but, there are still some problems that commonly arise when it comes to building and maintaining with these employees. Here are eight tips to make sure that this isn’t a problem for you.

Test Your Communication Methods

Traditionally, the most common form of communication is using email or a phone but, in your situation, this might not be the most effective so it will pay to experiment to see what works for you.

For example, you might like to try video conferencing software, such as Skype, or collaboration tools such as Slack or any of the others. This will help you to find the channel that works best for you so you can optimise how you and your teams communicate with your remote workers.

HR Manager, Matthew Galle continues;

“You don’t want to get to a critical task, only to find out that your tools or communication channel isn’t working. Instead, make sure you try out your software several times and give the opportunity to ask questions.”

Recognise Your Employee Efforts

In the office, you may have things like an ‘employee of the month’ or similar kinds of recognition programs. However, this becomes a lot more difficult when you have remote workers. The best way to resolve this issue is by starting a virtual recognition programme with your remote workers, effectively levelling the field. You can award your workers with virtual badges or prizes.

Use a Variety of Communication Methods

Remote workers could be working in different time zones or simply prefer to work during non-traditional hours. This could cause problems since you may only work office hours which means that you’ll never really get to communicate with your employees.

However, this problem can be overcome by using a variety of communication channels. For example, you might like to set up a social media page for your employees. This means everybody can be involved and stay up to date with everything that’s going on while having the opportunity to connect with other people.

Use Professional Tools

As mentioned above, there are many tools and resources out there that can help you to enhance your employee engagement rates. Here’s a few of the best you can start using right away.

  • Global Calculator: This calculator can help you to track your spending so you can spend effectively.
  •  Ie vs Eg: An online blog to help you learn about grammar, improve the readability of your writing.
  • Mural: An online tool that can create complete digital workspaces for your team to work on together.
  • Da Pulse: A project manager tool that can help all your workers collaborate easily.
  • Cite It In: Use this tool to add citations to your communications so they’re professional and easy to read.

Use Eye Contact

One of the most important aspects to remember when talking to somebody is to make eye contact with them. However, this becomes a lot more difficult when using a screen. However, it’s important to look directly into the lens of your camera so you can make virtual eye contact, perfect for clearer communication and a better relationship.

Hold Meetings

One of the best ways to maintain relationships between your remote workers is by holding weekly meetings. For some businesses, daily meetings might be too much but holding a meeting, during suitable hours in the beginning or the end of each week is a great way to pull everybody together.

During these meetings, you can make sure that everybody is on the same page and aim to complete the same goals. This is a great way to motivate your team, especially if these meetings are completed over a video call with everybody involved.

Alice Wheeler, an HR Manager for Paper Fellows, explains:“When you’re holding your meetings, it’s just as important to give your employees a chance to speak. They may be able to bring new ideas to the table or have something that they need to say about what you’re talking about, so make sure the opportunity is there.”

Review Your Conversations

Hopefully, one of your primary communication channels is through video software. One of the most effective ways to improve these conversations is by recording your chats and then watching them back. This will help you to be reviewed, on both ends, helping you to become more effective next time.

Don’t Be Afraid to Give Feedback

Remote workers thrive on feedback and it’s so important that you give it to them, both good and bad. When the work is great and what you’re looking for, tell them it’s great and it’s what you’re looking for. If the work is bad and not suitable, tell them so they can push their standards back up to where they need to be.
