Engaging and Caring together in the local NHS, key learning from our event on 1st October
We were thrilled to welcome:
John Travers, Internal Communications and Engagement Lead, from Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust
Naomi Holland, Staff Experience Adviser, University Hospitals Birmingham
Dr Amanda Gatherer, Chief Psychologist Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust
They joined us to share some of the work they had tried in engaging and caring for people working in two local NHS Trusts. The slides and notes capture how the people who care for all of us took new routes to care for each other in coping with the pressures posed by the outbreak of COVID-19. We were inspired by the way compassion underpins employee engagement in the NHS and what we can all learn from trauma-informed approaches to engagement during new and challenging times.
I was one of many reaching for a something to wipe my moist eyes!!
Here’s what some of our participants were inspired to take back into their workplace:
- How trauma can be a springboard to greater emotional wellbeing
- The power of listening and recognising we don’t need to have any answers
- We cannot underestimate the importance of our four legged friends at the moment
- Apply our own oxygen mask before helping anyone else
- Importance of recognition by senior management and providing opportunities for all staff to talk about their experiences/concerns
- Ensuring managers have the tools to help their people through conversations
- We can all make a difference whatever our skills are eg Project Wing Man: the pilots and air hostesses from the Birmingham Airport used their skills to support staff on the frontline
Save the dates: join the conversation 16:00 – 17:00 every 1st Thursday of the month
