The following case study was provided as part of the evidence for the effectiveness of employee engagement strategies in improving performance, productivity and, in the private sector profitability. It has been used cumulatively with other submissions compiled by many leading companies and organisations to leave little room for doubt about the statistical importance of engaging employees.

Fleet Hire is an independent business support company providing vehicle management services to small, medium and large private sector organisations. With an employee base of 60 people it currently manages circa 7,000 vehicles nationally.
Since 2010 the company has experienced year on year double digit growth, improvements in absence and customer satisfaction survey rankings, as a consequence of the changes to the way that it engages with its people and the positive influences this has had on performance.
In order to compete, survive and thrive as an SME business they needed to re-think their employee engagement strategy to encourage improved motivation and service levels.
While the company made a number of improvements to its employee benefits programme, two initiatives were key in making changes to the working environment. A ‘Social Support Structure’ was created and a ’HAPPY’ award was implemented.
As a result, there was a 25% improvement in sickness absence rate; an improvement in the independent industry customer satisfaction survey, with ranking improving from 6.7 to 2.4; and with bottom line profitability, with double digit growth since 2010.
